I believe we are all faced with life changing moments. Some of us cross the path of change more often then others. Some of us deal with change better then others. Sometimes we know change is coming and sometimes change can happen in an instant.
We moved to Los Lunas, NM 3 months ago. The very first Sunday we were here I met a girl Kally. We just briefly talked in the hallway her baby and my baby are the same age. I started to ask her about doctors, dentists, etc. She asked what kind of insurance I had and I told her military or triwest. She explained to me that her sister in law and brother have that insurance and to talk to them. She pointed them out to me. She said, "he is blind, you can't miss him." I think I asked something stupid like did he become blind serving? Sometimes I feel like an idiot when I talk to people! She said yes and explained a bit of the story to me.
So Michael her brother was in Afghanistan exactly one year ago and was hit by an IED. His best friend was killed.... His best friend was married and had a 2 month old baby girl. Michael lost his eyesight and has extensive scaring from the accident. Michael is now married to his best friends wife and they are expecting their first baby together in April.
You can read the blog his family put together here:
My favorite post is under May 18th, 2010.
Or you can google Michael Malarsie and read a bit about him through newspaper articles.
Why am I sharing this with you? Well, after reading and seeing this story unfold I have to admit that it has affected me deeply. But really something happened on Sunday that will stick with me forever and has changed my life. On Sunday I was out in the hallway at church trying to get my very cranky one year old asleep and in walked a lady wearing blue jeans and a jacket. I got to talking to her and she told me she was here helping Michael learn to use his new sight dog. I was intrigued about the process and was asking questions. She told me a lot of information and explained that she was from Connecticut and that she usually doesn't travel. They only travel when they need to help a Veteran. That was fuzzy good feeling number 1.
And in my little pea sized brain I thought WOW, that is amazing that they will do this for Veterans and others who have lost their sight. She has dedicated her life to this process of helping blind people. Fuzzy good feeling #2
I thanked her for doing this special service, especially for the Veterans. I shared with her that my husband was serving in Iraq. Her response to me is what changed me... "Well, mam' I pray to God that I will never have to meet you again." She didn't say it malicious or like oh you are a weirdo I never want to see you again. It was a true and honest prayer that she hoped that my family would never need her services. It was sincere. It was true. And in my heart I prayed. I PRAYED LOUD AND CLEAR that I too would never need to meet her again. And I was overwhelmed with a great sense of peace that if in fact we do ever need her service thank goodness there is such a thing thats fuzzy good feeling #3.
I think too often we hear things like all the combat troops are out of Iraq and think oh yes there is little to no war left in that country. That couldn't be further from the truth. Troy has shared some things with me, heard some things, seen some things first hand that is nothing like peace. Those serving are in harms way. They do risk their life for us. Don't be fooled into to thinking otherwise. Maybe its not blasted on the news everyday but there is death, accidents, and horrible things that happen where our soldiers are serving. Even just a week ago 2 soldiers were killed who were staying right next to where Troy is currently located. Did I see anything about it on the news or newspaper? NOPE!
Okay really there is a point to my ramblings.... DON'T take life for granted. Take the first step of change. Make a better life for yourself. Live life and be happy. Tell your spouse you love them. Let your kids eat cake for dinner. Pay for the person behind you in the fast food line. Give somebody a hug who looks sad. Write that old friend. Take a walk outside even if its in the snow. Return the grocery cart that is sitting in the middle of parking lot. Call your mom and tell her you love her... YOUR DAD too! Wrap your arms around your family and show them you love them. Do it by action. Be kinder. Be more patient. Be loving. Be more understanding. Find joy in the journey you are creating. Thats just it... YOU CREATE YOUR JOURNEY.
